We dodged a severe weather "bullet" Sunday evening. No wind and only a light rain from the storm that hit Tigerville.
Changed our operating schedule again. While we could really use Monday and Tuesday to do orchard work each week, the fruit crop is large and it hurts to see so many customers want to stop on Tuesdays. So for the remainder of the 2008 season, the retail market will be open 6 days a week. Closed on Mondays. Just a reminder: The new market phone number is (864) 895-0608.
Blackberry picking is still good and should be for another 10 days. Have a good supply daily of picked blackberries and blueberries.
This week we will finish picking Washington peaches. By weekend will start picking Redglobes and Lorings. Picked first White Lady sub-acid white peaches. While size is a little small, eating quality is outstanding!
Now picking lots of big beautiful nectarines--Sunglo and Flavortop.
Will pick the first apples of the season today; Paulareds. A tart, part McIntosh apple. Good for cooking and eating for those who like sour green apples. Maybe with a little salt before each bite! Should start picking Ginger Golds within 2 weeks. Galas within 3 weeks.
Making our first batch of Betty's "famous" Country Catsup today. Have already made and on our retail shelves: Blackberry, Peach, Plum, Strawberry, Blueberry preserves. Rhubarb and Strawberry/Rhubarb sauces. Will make Nectarine preserves this week.
Plan to make trip to Glenville, Georgia August 11/12 to pick up annual supply of "fresh green" Jumbo White Virginia peanuts. Should have our delicious boiled "fresh green" peanuts available by August 14.
HAVE IMMEDIATE NEED FOR AN EXPERIENCE FARM TRACTOR DRIVER to Bush Hog mow and to herbicide our apple and peach tree rows. Will be driving 4-wheel drive, straight shift Kubota tractor.
Hope to see you at the farm soon!!
Dick Perdue and all the Perdue's Mountain Fruit Farm staff.
