Finally, finally, the drought has been broken. Three showers at farm in last six days. While peaches and nectarines are ripening very fast and the
size is smaller, they are just about the sweetest I've ever tasted.
We are now at the peak of the peach season in quantity and quality. Time to do your canning, freezing and making delicious peach or nectarine ice cream!
Will complete picking of Red Globes, Contenders and what few Lorings we had, this week. Have started picking Biscoes - one of my favorites! Will also start picking Georgia Belles by weekend.
Have completed picking of White Ladies and now picking Blushing Star white sub-acid peaches.
While our plum crop is small this season due to their frost/freeze susceptibility, we do have a good crop and just starting to pick Bubblegum plums.
They are very tasty and fun to eat. Just pop gumball-sized plum in your mouth, chew, spit out the pit and pop in another.
Have worked very hard to do much better job of growing three apple varieties that don't do well in this climate: Mc Intosh, Cortland and of course, Honeycrisp.
So far the extra efforts to grow look good. Have harvestable crops on all three. Should start picking in next 10 to 15 days.
Our bees have been working hard this season. Have extracted honey from 18 "supers", strained and bottled. Now have available several bottle sizes of
mountain flower and sourwood honey. Also honey with comb.
Up until now, sweet corn has been growing so fast much harvested too large for good boiling corn. This week the corn is perfect size for boiling!
Tomato size and quality has been limited. Finally, this week we have jumbo size, field ripe tomatoes. One thick slice is just right for a great tomato sandwich!
Have made and now available: Blackberry, Strawberry, Blueberry, Peach and Plum preserves. Also delicious "old fashion" Southern Pickled Peaches which will be
available after they age for about 10 more days.
Please visit us at the farm soon!
